Charberry,
I seem to be healing up ok. (Down 13 lbs so far, 6 lbs since last Friday.)Thursday will be my 3 week mark. I am trying to stay hydrated, but because of the no appetite thing, I haven't pushed eating very many solid things though. I think that will be the biggest test for how things are going. So far, I haven't had any of the coughing that triggered my need for the surgery. That is really good. I have continued taking my Prevacid Solutabs twice a day, but I anticipate going off them soon. I go in for a GI follow-up next week and will see what he says then. (Also going for follow-up on my lower GI issues as well.) I go in to see my Pulomonologist on Nov 4th. He was the one that recommended the Nissen last May. He said that I couldn't get my asthma under control until my "swallowing disorder" was under control.
I completely understand the frustrations that occur during bad days/ weeks/ months. Despite everything, don't give up on finding your solution. Because of my unusual symptoms, it originally took years of horrible coughing to be diagnosed with reflux as a major cause. Then it took years to work through my reflux treatments. I finally found a couple docs that were willing to support me in finding my solutions.
Regarding your voice issues, I've had some perioRAB of trouble with this also over the years. During a reflux flare-up a couple years ago, I COMPLETELY lost my voice for about 5 weeks. It was really tough because during some of my worst times, I was spending 8 hours a day teaching preschoolers. One time I had a mom come in and ask about my horse. This confused me because I have horse allergies. Turns out that her daughter told her I had a horse, when in fact my voice was hoarse. Now whenever my voice gets bad, I think back on that and laugh.
As for your testing, I will say that I felt (and still feel) that most were just going through the motions. I did have one however, prescribed by my Pulmonologist, that gave me surprising results. The esophagram/ modified barium swallow testing showed that I not only had a lot of acid coming up from my stomach, but that I also had food coming up. I was aspirating some of the acid and both were giving me irritation I wasn't aware of. Ironically at the time of the test last April I was on Prevacid 2x/day and I wasn't having any acid or asthma symptoms and I felt great. All the other tests were repeat tests from 3 years ago so I really wasn't surprised when the results came back the same.
Take care,
MR
