I'm a 40 year male with a L5-S1 central disc protrusion with loss of fluid and inflamed Facet joints with pain in both hips, leg pain and nurabness, weakness in both legs and feet this happened on 4-2009. I've had 4 epidurals and a temp nerve block by pain management. Now they want to do a RFa. I had 12 wks of phy thearpy with no relief. I'm currently on 900mg of neurotin, 20 mg of flexeril,750mg of naprelan, lorcet plus as needed finally gotten a neur-sugeron he said i might have to have a artifical disc replacement. just hade a Mri and 6 x-rays on 2-9-09 along with a nerve test done. Waiting on results. I use to be very active , buy temp down for the count. Sorry for the long post. Thanks.

My Neurosurgeon is recommending ADR too, or Fusion. Insurance (one of the Blue's) doesn't cover ADR. I'm in constant, but bearable pain; however, if I stand too much, I can have flair-ups that cause me to have to stay home from my desk job for a couple days until the pain subsides to bearable levels. If you get ADR, get the ProDisc, not the one that starts with a "C"). I would also recommend lots of research before you decide. I'm 46, so we are in a similar situation.

 I'm responding on behalf of my wife who is also
on Workmen's Comp due to a on the job injury. She also did
everything that you did for relief (injections, painkillers, pt)
before finally going for surgery by a Orthopaedic Surgeon
for a Herniated Bulging Disc L/5 S1. Surgery was six hours,
six inch incision, Disc was fused with implant/ hardware (screws/
roRAB), complications after surgery put her in ICU Support.
This was surpose to be a Minimally Invasive One Hour
MicroDiscectomy with a small less then a inch incision with
a release from the hospital the same day or next.

Get a second and third opinion. TRY TO AVOID ANY MAJOR
RISKY SURGERY. Go with the MicroDiscectomy. Hope everything
goes well for you. Keep us posted with updates.

I will keep ya'll updated, I return to the Pain clinic on Feb 15, and my neurosugeron on Feb 25th. I know the pain others go through.

:) Similar situation here, but not the same. Have Bulging Herniated
Disc L5/S1. Also on Workers Comp. Have done the epidurals, pt, painkillers and it don't work. You indicate that your neur-surgeon might do a artificial disc replacement. KEY WORD HERE IS MIGHT. Get a 2nd/3rd opinion, and don't rush into anything until all your many questions are answered to your satisfaction. Try to do a minimally invasive Micro Discectomy. Smaller incision less then a inch, about one hour surgery and quicker recovery. Hope it goes well for you.

Hey everyone, I'm adding to my other post. I had a 2nd mri and x-rays on the 25th march,Neurosurgeon said he I should be back at work, I told him I wasn't able to return to my job. I had a discogram w/ contrast on april 4th. I went to see Pain managment on April 6th and the results were L3-4 has a mild deformity,L4-5 full thickness annular tear postlaterally on the left with contrast extending along the left disc , is a level 4 tear. L5-s1 a large full thickness annular tear in the midline w/contrast extending outside the level of the disc, is a level 5 tear. No wonder why I have a burning sensation in my back. My Orthopedic said he was going to do a Discogram in May 09, but changed his mind and then released me to the pain clinic. I return to my Neurosurgeon on the 29th April. I will keep yall updated. Thanks Sootman
