Hi,
had a CT scan few days ago. Waiting to see another doctor, but there is a very long cue!
Can someone pls tell me how bad does it look etc? To me its a black magic...
What the treatment, without an operation etc ?
" L5/S1 Broad-spaced posterior disc annular bulgr, with a more focal central and left-sided paracentral disc protrusion, which exceeRAB 6-7 mm posterior to,2 mm inferior to and 2 mm superior to the disc space and which has moderate mass effect on the anterolateral theca and the forming left S1 nerve root. The disc material abuts the medial aspect of the forming right S1 nerve root as well. Although disc material does extend into the inferior aspect of the left-sided L5/S1 neural exit foramen, there is no impingement on the surface of the exiting left L5 nerve root. "
Please note , English is my 2nd language, so pls be kind and explain in a more simplistic way :)
Big thanks

I am not sure but when do you see Dr for it. Maybe an injection might help. Good luck Deb::jester:

Hello and welcome to this board.

Your disc is no longer in it's original healthy state between two of your vertebra (your segmented bones in your spine). That disc is at the base of your spine and is disc bulging out, and putting pressure on the area where the nerves run though at that level, but is not pinching the nerve there (yet). The areas it speaks of: foramina is the opening area in the spine (nerve canal) in which the nerves all run through. The thecal sac is the surrounding hose that the nerves sit in. Like a straw.

I hope this helps.

thanks for the response.

what are the procedures to fix such things? i had this problem for over 10 years now!!!
Any excercise etc? Or a operation, and if so, how long does the recovery takes?
thank you so much!!!

The radiologist doesn't mention degenerative disc disease, so there's a chance physical therapy might help you stretch and open the area enough that the disc can move back into place, and then be stabilized by strengthening the pelvic girdle.

Many people have bulging discs and never need surgery, as you have mentioned that you've had this pain for 10 or so years. I have a bulging disc at the same level as yours and I've had it for at least 28 years now. It was very bad for over 15 years then it just quit hurting, though it is still bulging.

Physical exercise is always the best medicine for the back. But you do need to learn to exercise in a way that will protect your spine while getting the muscles that surround and support your back strong and keeping them that way.

I did not notice where you are from, but if they offer injections for your spine, you may want to try them to see if they bring you any relief, and also oral medications to help relieve your pain. (These are not cures, but just helpful tools for you to go about your life in times of great pain). The injections are also not a cure, but a tool to help reduce swelling around the disc area some, which relieves pressure on the area, which then reduces pain.

Hope this helps some. Good luck.

thanks for the quick answer!
i can cope with the pain, its no problem, so i don't need any medication,

My problem is that i got used to sitting/walking etc with the wrong spinal 'shape',so that the pelvis is more backwarRAB. So when i do really heavy lifting etc, the muscles in that area are hurting, its not the disk area etc.
I will go to the physio for a therapy. What exercises should I do? I have tried various things, eg i used, to do long running, gym everyday and martial arts, but it did not help :/
big thanks ppl! I feel more confident now!

ps. i'm from Australia, but didn't want to post more, as i got a dream job, so they can't know bout the disk problem :/
thank you
