I just found this message board today. I have been searching every where for info about ALIF and only get conflicting info. I am scheduled for an L5-S1 fusion on Noveraber 11th. I've had lower back and sciatic problems for years and it got so bad that I have been progressively dropping activities the last 4 years and am now to a point where only morphine cuts the pain and I only take it at night. I have had several surgeries including for prostate cancer in 2006 so I know a little about the abdominal side of this although my prostate was done robotically.
Surgery has never bothered me but this one has me a little more nervous. The doc put me on disability until 2/14/2010 and I was told that I can't sit for more than 20 minutes at a time after the surgery. The doctors office is at least 30 minutes away so do I ride part way, stop for a walk, and then continue? How about sitting in a recliner to watch tv? Is it ok to ride farther in the car if the seats recline? They are real comfy leather/electric seats in the car.
