New here, an im honored and saddened at the same time, to be in this club. :) LOL
in 2005 i herniated L4/5(rt side) by pulling a woman from a car accident while on duty.
Had a neurosurgeon perform a microdischectomy. almost a year later herniated L5/S1 (rt side), microdischectomy done by very good ortho doc who specializes in backs.
October 2009 started having pain in right hip/buttock. then whole right leg went nurab from hip to ankle. had a laminectomy done on L4/5 in dec of
2009.surgeon said if you come back again im fusing you. i did therapy for like 3-4 months. did great got back in shape, did 2-3hrs of therapy 3s a week, but at one point i had pain in the lower left side of my back, left buttock area. they treated it with ultrasound and ionto pain patch, it went away.they made me do a functional fitness test(im a firefighter) with an airpak an all my gear on,(pushing pulling lifting dragging etc) i passed it, an eventually went back to work in the beginning of june. 2 weeks later i started having pain in the left buttock area. in like 2 weeks its gone down to my left thigh to the back of my knee an started havin spasms now in left calf an left foot. i was put on light duty, an i made them send me for an MRI, just got the results last night, herniated L5/S1 on the left side, compressing the S1 nerve root. surgeon says itll be an "easy fix" scheduled for surgery the 29th. my question to all of you is.. why now is he talking dischectomy instead of fusion? (hes supposed to call me back to discuss this)How involved IS fusion? an what is fusion? does fusion stabilize a weak area? i need as much info as i can get here. thanks
Tony
