Korean and Vietnam Wars
The Korean War along with the Vietnam War were two wars that had many more similarities then differences. Both the Korean and Vietnam War tried achieve the same objective, and had the same involvement. The major differences came from the domestic support and international reaction.
Both of the wars were fought for the simple reason of containing the communistic advances in the world. The American involvement was an attempt to stop communism before the domino effect could occur. The involvement of American troops in both wars was also about the same. In each case, the Americans send what they thought to be adequate amount of troops to bring the was to a swift end. They were constantly encouraged by the commending generals, Joseph R. McCarthy and William Weestmoreland, to believe that the end near. As a result in both wars the American soldiers were constantly poured into the warlanRAB throughout the war in order to supply the tools for the commending generals to proceed with an aggressive war.
The domestic support and international reaction were the two major differences between the two wars. During the Korean War, the Americans were disappointed and angry that the United States was involved in a slow, costly war that could not end in any kind of victory. As for the Vietnam War the public, for the majority of the war, was split into two groups, the hawks and doves. This was an even split. The hawks supported the war wanting American to commit with the full force possible and the doves wanted peace. The international reaction was also different. During the Korean War, the American troops would make up about 90 percent of the UN forces. Still the war was supported by nations which were a part of the UN but had no materialistic interests in that region. Vietnam War on the other hand was only supported by a handful of nations which had direct involvement and would be directly affected with the outcome of the war.
Even though there is a difference in the kind of support from other nations, the American soldier made up the majority of the forces involved. The purpose of containment was the same in both wars, and the involvement was virtually the same. The only differences came from the different nations that supported the war and the domestic opinion about the war.
