@Korea: Which phones can I take back to Canada?

Hi, I was referred to these forums by someone at askMeFi ("I recommend you ask this question over on Howard Forums, which seems to be the best place for mobile phone information.")

I am at Korea, and my relatives have offered to buy me a cell phone. However, I don't know if any of the phones from here will work if I bring it back to Canada. Can anybody tell me what kind of phones work in Canada? Or better yet, specify some phones that work?

I have also heard, although I am not certain, that I have to buy an unlocked phone, and buy a phone that takes a common SIM card, and that I have to be on either FIDO or ROGERS. Can anybody clarify?

Thanks

However, don't count on your carrier activating the phone on their network. I know some carriers will not allow anything but their own phones on, plus you would have no technical support whatsoever, if you have problems.

You should talk to the your carrier in Canada before buying a phone elsewhere.

BTW, I think both Rogers and Telus are GSM and Korean CDMA phones will not work. They do not have SIM cards and I don't think you can unlock them.

...Telus is GSM? HoFo better update their description for the Telus subforum then- it says "Canadian CDMA/iDen provider" with no mention of GSM anywhere.

That, or someone made a mistake about saying that Telus is GSM.
