I already know from reading many comments on you tube that you americans seem to 'favour' (thats the UK spelling), the Kodiak as the largest bear. But please, only intelligent, informative and accurate responses please. My own view is that the polar is longer, taller and GENERALLY heavier. The Kodiak MAY GENERALLY have a heavier build for its size, but as it is smaller, the overall girth and dimensions are still behind the polar. View the following you tube clip for reference, 'polar bear plunge (part 3) zookeeper interview'. The first 40 seconds are only relevant, although the graphic compares the polar and grizzly (half in view on left) it is surely not difficult to see that the size difference between grizzly and kodiak is not as much as with the polar ? I also noted the mans reaction when told the answer to his question of grizzly/polar height ! As the keeper said, conrad is an AVERAGE SIZE POLAR BEAR at 9 1/2 ft tall. I am sure you will agree he is impressive standing upright !!!
joniboni - good, accurate information, there may be an upper weight range higher in kodiaks although I have not seen this confirmed anywhere, but, as you say, the overall average weight range is higher in the polar. And What you say is indeed why the kodiak grows to the size it does, afognak is another island in the group where you find them. But give me your definitive answer to the size/weight question. JOHN O - there is indeed evidence to show that the average size/weight of the polar MAY be dropping due to climatic changes and the knock-on effects this brings.... AND CAN RESPONDERS PLEASE WATCH THE CLIP I REFER TO AND ALSO INCLUDE COMMENTS ON THAT IN THEIR ANSWERS,THANK YOU.
oikos - statistics are way out, reverse weight and height ranges for a bit more accuracy, lengths ? please! SARCASM ? perhaps if you watch the clip you might realise it is an american keeper at san diego zoo... Your source (B&G) I think most people will agree these figures are not worth a dam.
