I read this book years ago and cannot remember the library where I borrowed it Though google has helped find two books I could not remember title/author from, I cannot find this one.
The main character is a girl living in a rural/17th-19th century environment. Her father is a blacksmith. They are told they cannot go near a certain tree. The girl believes her time period is correct, but in reality, the community is a tourist/visitor attraction and the tree has a window for observation. It is actually the 20th-21st century. Her father convinced her mother to raise the family there so he did not have to quit his job as a blacksmith because modern society demands fewer smiths.
The village/community is hit with a virus and many people become ill. The girl's mother sends her out a door to find modern medicine to cure the illness. She escapes and essentially discovers the way we live. I remember her coming in contact with a trucker and discovering makeup. In the end, her sister is amazed at how flushed she can make her cheeks without pinching them due to blush.
If anyone knows the title/author of this book or can suggest a book with a similar plot or themes, please let me know.
Thanks!
