Knee pain during workout and exercise?

I have put on some weight in the past 2 years since I quit smoking, so I do not carry the same weight that I used to now that I've gained about 60lbs. Because of this, I tend to get knee pains now that I am just starting to work out.
Does anybody have any suggestions or advice on this?

As for any posisble pre-existing injuries, I did hurt my knees once rollerblading 15 yrs ago as a young teen but never got that checked out by anyone.. Never gave me problems before though.. I am 28 now btw!

I began meeting with a trainer 1X a week and she is trying to have me stretch and and do exercises which do not add any extra weights or strain on the knees..
We did a couple of exercises today where I bend at the knee and it does hurt a little bit now (8hrs later.) I expect them to hurt for maybe another day or so maybe.
I'm not sure if this is normal; do I just pop an advil and keep on doing what I've been doing and everything will just get better in time? I wonder if the pain is supposed to dissipate in time as I become more fit..

P.S. Should I be wearing knee supports? This is something I am not sure of, I know nothing about.. My trainer said she doesn't think I'd need them because we are not using heavy weights. I'm not obese but I am pretty heavy compared to the weight I used to carry!
