Knee pain during taper phase of marathon training?

I have spent the last 15 weeks training for a marathon. Overall I think the training went really well - I stuck to the training plan almost exactly, experienced steady improvement throughout, and was injury-free.

My plan calls for a three week taper. I have 8 days to go until the race, so I have been tapering for two weeks. My peak mileage week was 50 miles, this second-to-last week is 28 miles and next week will be only 14 miles before the race.

Now the last few days my left knee has started to hurt a bit, not when running but in-between, for example today (which is a total day off from activity). It doesn't ache enough to be really worrying, it's just like, "Why now, when things are getting easy?" It never really hurt during peak mileage, or during 20 mile runs, so it's strange I would feel that now.

I have heard that this is actually fairly typical - that weird aches will pop up in the week or two before the race. I'd like something more to go on, though. Why does this happen? Is it really normal and nothing to worry about? My theory is that the body is so used to all the running you're doing, that when you ease off, it's like "Whoa! Now I have a chance to do some repairs!" and the bodily repairs are manifested as inflammation, which hurts. That's my theory, anyway.

Any thoughts appreciated!!!
