Knee Injured???

Hi
This is my 1st post here, so I will get to the point!

I started a course on gym instruction that would lead to personal trainer, I booked in summer of 2006!and got to do two lessons of my 1st module when my knee gave in.
I have had a knee injury for about 4 years, I have been to millions of physio's done all exercises to strengthen my thigh muscles and ham strings, and in the end the knee just decided enough was enough.
So about a month ago (wow its been that long I had cartlidge and a clean out of the knee, the surgeon told me that my ALC is pretty badly damaged!this means I couldn't do a gym career without reconstructive surgery, I have an appointment with them to discuss whether I want it as they looked worried as to the extent of the damage.
I'm worried as they did suggest I change my career even though they suggested surgery, I have a feeling that I will be told that I will have to do something else.
Has anyone had any reconstructive surgery, or has anyone who is an instructor found that any one working for them or with them has ever been a risk because of past surgery...

I hope it made sense?
