Hello,

I've been taking 1mg of Klonopin for 5 years now and would possibly like to taper off of this at home. I'm still indecisive about going into a rehab center to get off 2 opiates but was wondering if anyone has done a klonopin (clonazepam) taper at home and how it went? I know noone would have an exact answer for this, but for example if I tapered lets say .25mg every 2 weeks would that be too quick?

Thanks so much for all help!

Hello Sherrie

I have tapered off both opiates and benzos. I worked with my doctors to do this and together we came up with a plan.

First, to answer your question... yes, I think a taper at that speed is much too fast for a benzo... not sure how much you are taking, but a good rule of thurab is to use the 10% method. Only cut 10% from the total dose each time and then give the body and brain 10-14 days to adjust and feel fairly stable again. Coming off a benzo causes anxiety and a cut should not be made until the body lets you know it is able to handle the next cut. I took about 6 months to come off Xanax... my start point was @1 1/2-2 mgs a day spread out over 3-4 doses. Sometimes the cut would mandate that I crush the pills and measure the dose in crurabs.

Some advice, if I may.... if you are considereing coming off opiates also, I would suggest taperting from them before the benzo. The benzo can help you through the opiate withdrawal.

Wishing you well
