Hi. I have severe, treatment resistant depression and severe anxiety with panic attacks. Been through 7 years of therapy..several kinRAB of therapy etc etc.

Anyway now on Seroquel 100mg, Prozac 40mg and Klonopin .5mg BID.

Seroquel and prozac have greatly helped my depression but not my anxiety. Prozac and Celexa are the only two SSRIs that I can take and Celexa just pooped out on me so changing SSRIs to get better results for the anxiety isn't possible

Anyway I was just given Klonopin wednesday and was told hopefully it will just be a short term thing that maybe the higher dose of seroquel (was moved from 50mg to 100mg) would help the anxiety better.

the Klonopin has helped the anxiety so much that I've wondered about asking if I can stay on it. I do not have an addictive personality. Have taken xanax before even at almost 1mg 4x a day for weeks and had no problems coming off of it. I am monitered extremely closely and usually don't go over two weeks without seeing my doctor for a med check. I also never had to have xanax dose upped the whole time I was on it so I didn't build a tolerance. I like the klonopin better because it doesn't knock me out like xanax did. Sometimes I can't believe I'm taking seroquel and klonopin and am still conscious all day heh

has anyone stayed on klonopin long term with good effects?

Me too, for about four years now, and could not image my life without it......no I don't abuse it, just take as needed.

Been a life saver for me.

you are playing with fire

benzos make heroin look like child's play once you are addicted

also what drugs were you on when you stopped the xanax?

They could be filling the receptors that xanax may have injured and withdrawal may lie up the road when they are discontinued

That's what happened to me, over a year later

either way, benzo's are a terrible idea for use of more than a few days (as it says in the fine print)

I have to majorly disagree. for what its worth I was on nothing but a low dose of celexa when I stopped Xanax. I would much rather take klonopin daily and be able to function than be like I have been off of it.

I was looking for support. I understand some people believe benzos to be bad...I happen to think not when taken under close supervision of a knowledgeable doctor which I am.

I've never had any issues stopping any meRAB....and I have taken strong ones including Xanax (up to 4mg a day at times after a certain trauma) extremely strong pain killers, muscle relaxants including Butalbital. The only medication I've EVER had trouble stopping was Effexor and still managed to do it cold turkey

I think its a broad statement that they are dangerous just because YOU had a bad experience

If daily klonopin gives me my life back and my doctor suggests it...you better believe I'll be taking it!

Do not argue with each over the good or bad of medication.
Post your opinion ONCE, if someone does not agree with you there's no need to come back and agrue your point.

Not everyone reacts the same to any medication or treatment.
Agree to disagree and move on.

Thank you for your cooperation.

I started taking Klonopin 12 years ago daily. I was having panic attacks 10 times a day. I was prescribed Paxil and Klonopin. The Klonopin has by far helped the most. Contrary to most on this board, the SSRI was needed for about six months. I took it for 4 years. I stopped the SSRI and have just taken Klonopin three times a day 5mg since then.

While I need to get off the Klonopin, it is the drug that rescued me from my panic attacks. You couldn't pay me enough to take an SSRI ever again. The side effects were terrible for me.

This is not advice. Please consult your doctor for which meRAB are best for you.

I agree completly when your lifes to the point where anxiety makes a big difference sometimes benzos are the only medication that helps in my opinion. I use xanax i dont take it daily but as needed because my doctor. But daily use would be super helpful to reduce constant anxiety and as long as you dont got addictive qualities you should be fine people are on Klonopin for years

My mother is trying to get off of klonopin now.It will lose the good effects soon and then you will need more. She was on 1mg for 2 years and started having tolerance withdrawals. One dr. thought she might have parkinson's. They had to switch her to valium (that was no fun) and now start taking her off of that. She will never take klonopin again. We still don't know about the PD because withdrawals have been so bad.

I'v been on klonopin for many years. It is very effective for anxiety. The only problem comes when your body gets accustomed to it and you need more for the positive effects. Everybody is different but usually this is a common occurance. You can expect a few months of help if you use it everyday then it seems to poop out(tolerance). Although I have heard of people taking daily and doing just fine but this is rare. It seems if you can take it a few times a week, as needed, then maybe the tolerance won't kick in. The only reason why I'm still on it is because I can't come off it. I take .5 twice a day. This has been my experience. Good luck to you.

If you (or your doctor) are keen to avoid long term daily Klonopin, then Buspar might be a reasonable alternative

That said, provided you accept that you will probably become dependant over the long term, daily Klonopin might be reasonable in your situation.
