I have been having pain in my lower back for about 6-8 months now. It is all the way down by the tail bone on the left and sometimes radiates through my buttocks down the back of my leg to just above the knee. It is always worst right when I wake up and gets better through out the day. I can ride horses, run, hike etc with out problems. The pain is not all that bad really, at worst maybe a 5 from 1-10. I have also been having random sharp stabbing pains right in the same region only in the front. Again those pains are not bad, maybe a 3 at the worst and are normally more like muscle spasmish then anything else. They are worse when I have my period. I've seen a doctor and he said it was most likely a pinched nerve or herniated disc. He did X-rays and found nothing. I'm going to make another appointment but the big thing is...I suffer from sever anxiety and am horribly paranoid about cancer. I have almost ZERO history of cancer on eith side of my family. Only my Grandfather and my great aunt. Both died of smoking related cancers. Even so....I'm scared and would like any other suggestions of what it could be.

Sorry to hear you are having problems. I'm certainly not a doctor, but can tell you that disc problems can make pain radiate to other areas. Ask your doctor to send you for an mri. If it is a disc problem, it won't show up on an x-ray. I hope this helps.

Oh, I also meant to say, I think it's pretty normal for them to send you for an x-ray first, don't know why. I was sent for an x-ray before they sent me for an mri. Good luck! I hope you feel better soon. I know how terrible pain can be!

Thanks for the response showdee15. So what was my doctor looking for with X-rays? What will they show?

Thanks everyone. I have an appointment for the 4th of March. The earliest they could squeeze me in! I'll make sure to ask for an MRI....oddly, I've felt better in the last 2 days then I have in weeks....almost no pain at all......weird.

Hey sounRAB like bad discs or some thing like that x rays are useless ifn you have health ins have an mri it shows what the heck is wrong. My spine is messed up from top to bottom and have no ins and im in search of a free mri so i can possibally become a usefull meraber of society. good luck

Hi Therre, sorry to hear about your pain. I have had chronic back pain for more than 15 years now; much of it old injuries, some unattended. I just wanted to mention that I have been using magnets for a majority of my pain management and find it relieves the pain much like placing an asprin directly to that area. You can spend a fair bit on what are called therapeutic magnets which i have but I also use refrigerator magnets, car magnets and I place them directly on the area in pain. You can even slide them under your clothes, on your belt line during the day. I also use alpha lipoic acid for my restless leg syndrome and have found relief after only 7 days. I take 2 pills a day and its at the health food store. I also switched from prescription sleeping pills to 5HTP & Melatonin, if that helps. It's really working for me. Good Luck to You!

I'm not positive but I think that an x-ray will show arthritis. Someone else here may know more.
