Kill weeds/grass in "Red Apple" without harming it?

I have red apple ice plant (is it really considered an ice plant?) scattered over a slope. It's like a hill area, sloping more than 45 degrees in spots.

We've had a tremendous amount of weeds growing in and around the red apple. I pulled 90 percent and even sprayed many with Round Up. Thereafter, I put down a preventive by Miracle Gro, which is a similar product to Preen and is intended to stop germination of new weeds. Afterward, I also put down a wood chip mulch around the red apple, which made the area look really nice.

Well, while the weeds would probably be worse without the mentioned efforts, there are still a lot of them. The mulch definitely helped keep the weeds to a minimum in the bare areas around the red apple. The biggest problem is the weeds that are growing and thriving INSIDE the patches of red apple. Broadleaf weeds and the long, grass-like weeds that grow over a foot tall in a matter of days keep popping up from inside the red apple, where you'd hope sunlight would be kept out.

The question? What can I SPRAY all over the red apple area to kill ALL the weeds and grasses without killing the red apple??

I think I can deal with injuring the red apple a little, if that's what it takes to kill the weeds, but I would want to be sure it will get healthy soon after. Ideally, I don't want to harm the red apple at all, but some claim the red apple would even be affected by broadleaf sprays - I want ALL weeds gone, not just broadleaf weeds.

It's a pain in the butt to balance on the hill to pull weeds all day and try not to screw up the carefully laid mulch just to watch the weeds jump out again in less than a week! Also, it's downright impossible to pull all the weeds by the roots when they are hiding in the red apple.

FYI, I've already searched the internet and looked at products on the shelves. KILLER is one product some claim could work while others claim will harm the red apple or not even work effectively on the weeds.

Thanks, in advance, for input. Very appreciated.
