Im doing A2 Media Studies could people please give any opinions on the subject title to help me with my research for my A2 course work which is commencing now and will be finished in 2005 also any general opinions on on violence in the media is relevant as well. An opnions ideas or help on this subject will be greatfully received.

Thanks Alot, Adam2003

I took my last A-Level almost 5 years ago (wow), but I'll give it a shot.

Regarding the title, I'd be concerned as to the "too far" bit. How would you define "too far"? Might it be:

  • Amount of films released that contain violence - last year versus the year before, the year before that, the year before that, and so on
  • The levels of violence in films (abusive language, assault, murder, blood, gore...)
  • Society's "acceptance" of violence in films - e.g., a film in 2003 that containes multiple murders and machine gun violence gets rated as a 15 certificate; whilst a 1940s film was seen as risqu

I have to agree about the title - think carefully and see if you can't refine the wording slightly. Are you concentrating on 'Film' or the effects of film censorship in the UK? There's a good book called 'Censorship' that was released a few years ago if that's what you are going to focus on.

adam2003, sorry I cant really say much as I haven't seen Kill Bill, but I am interested in doing Media to AS level only- would you recommend it?

(I plan to do film studies to a2 however)

To everyone who has offered critisism and advice so far thank you very much it's helping me no end and giving me a clearer idea on how I should go about my A2 coursework as its early days. But keep the advice coming its much appreciated.

I have only seen Kill Bill Vol 1 and thought it was great! The fighting scenes were brilliant, I would say that the violence was entertaining more than anything else. I would love to be able to do some of the martial arts bit but I wouldn't go around with a sword trying to kill people just because I saw that film. If the film is well done (like Kill Bill) then the violence can be good but if the film is badly made then the violence can go too far but then it also depenRAB on what you would say is too far, is stabbing someone going to far or is having a puch up going too far.

Having done both media studies at AS and A2, and now working through my film studies degree, I can say that personally I have found them to be highly enjoyable.

I think, having discussed a variety of films with you here in the past, that you would probably really enjoy it. Just don't assume that it's watching videos all day - there's a lot of hard work that goes with it too.

Ooooh! Can I also gloat about my A2 project from last year that received 100% (60 UMS marks out of 60) ;) no? oh that's too bad :D :p

You dont fancy giving me a copy do you or pointers on a good subject to base my A2 coursework on as it is in very very early stages also anything that you did that could help me with mine this year.

Don't fancy giving you a copy 'cause that'd be too easy ;) :p However, you can have a few pointers :D

* You seem to have a good 'hook' and are looking in the right sort of area - just spend about half an hour thinking about what it is *exactly* that you want to look at. You are at the early stages at the moment (assuming it's for roughly this time next year) so don't worry about details; think more about what it is you are going to research and the way in which you can go about doing it.

* Think about how you will include the Key Concepts. What are you focusing on in your essay? Will it be narrative, representation, genre, etc? Look in your textbooks and have a hunt around the library. Again, just a good half hour of searching will help you decide on your direction.

* Look at your exam board's guidelines. They are usually available in PDF format on the website - what are they looking for, in what format, etc.

* Talk to your teachers! It's their job to help you and they will give you some great advice!

* Don't leave it till the last minute, but don't panic about it either ;)

Does anybody think that this title may be better for my coursework or does it need amending?

Hey, excellent! I'm doing Media only to AS in my second year of college as I have to do German AS in the first year, but I'm doing Film to A2 and the hoping to do a degree in it too.
