Keep waking up with a sharp pain in throat?

This is the second or third time this has happened this week. I'm sleeping then abruptly woken up with a very sharp pain on the left side of my throat, the need to cough, and loss of breath. What's going on. I looked in my throat and it's normal, doctors have looked I my throat and see nothing?
