Kawasaki Ninja 250 Carborator Problem?

I have a 2007 Kawasaki 250 with 1900 miles and I just got it out for the upcoming summer. The motorcycle runs fine while the clitch is on. When I release the clutch or try to give it some gas the bike shuts off right away. I was told that the bike needed to have the carburetor cleaned and fixed. I do not want to spend the $200 for the dealership to do this. Is there anything else that I can do?
 
make sure the side stand is up,they have a safety switch on them to stop you moving off with it down
