I recently (yesterday) purchased a SE K790a. I previously had a Moto v551; i could send any mp3 to it and use it as a ring tone. With this new phone, only midi files or mp3s that i download from rogers are allowed to be used as ringtones, nothing else - effectively forcing me to pay for them or go without. Does anyone know a way around this, and is it rogers blocking them or Sony themself?

It;s Rogers that is restricting the use of MP3's as ringtones. There are a couple of ways to resolve this.

1. Debrand the phone's firmware.
2. Edit the MP3 that you wish to use to a size of 600k or less.
3. Convert them to DRM

You can check out the link below for more info.

This was a previous thread talking about the same situation of a W810i branded to Cingular.

Thanks for the help.
Is there any free way of debranding my phone?
If not, which software do you recommend?
Also, is there a way to dump my current firmware, and are there any risks with doing this? I don't want to brick my brand-new phone!

No free way, unless you know of someone who can do it for you for free.

Wotan and Davinci has been the one that I use. I don't really update the firmware through SEUS. But wontanserver.com is what I mostly use. And yes, you can get rid of the the Rogers icons by flashing to the latest generic version. Just Google in those key words, and you can go from there. If you are not comfortable in any way with doing this on your own, I'd suggest you find someone or a business that can do it for you at a reasonable price. Check out the classifieds, craigslist, online, or anywhere else that would offer these services. One reputable online business is iUnlock...very curteous and professional. Just remember, when you flash it to the original manufacturers settings, it voids the warranty replacement through Rogers.

In any case, the K790a is a great phone. I might be getting the Bond silver edtition. Have fun with your new phone.
