k1500 chevy 350 cap and rotor malfunction?

Besides time, what makes a cap and rotor go bad on a 1997 Chevy Pickup with a Vortec 5700 (350 small block) ??? I put one in about a year ago and it is already shot. Rough idle and everything. What could have caused this????
