Just got the 6682...my initial review

First off, this phone replaced my 6230 (lockline) which I loved dearly. I would have gone with another 6230b had it still been available...oh well.

I know this phone has been out for a while, but it is new to me. The list of features for the 6682 is very impressive, but it looks like the learning curve will be pretty steep...considering I'm coming off the 6230. I'll just list a few pros and cons to keep with the whole brevity thing

Pros:
-screen size
-not having to tear the phone apart to access MMC
-zoom feature
-the quasi real friggin internet

Cons
-this thing weighs a friggin ton (compared to the 6230)
-button layout feels very wierd
-menu navigation could be more friendlier
-how the **** do you turn off the shutter sound (camera)
-too damn wide

Its only been a few hours, so I'm sure I'll warm up to it.

side note: I have heard rumors that this phone cannot be unlocked...that would be a real bummer. Anyone know if this is true or not?

to turn off the shutter sound, put your phone in silent mode.

oh ya, and, congrats on your 6682. Get a huge memory card and fill it up - -

Eh....that stinks. Oh well, guess its better than nothing. Thanks

I've been combing through some old threads, and it seems that this phone was highly anticipated before its release. I've gotten to page 35 of ??? and I still don't see anything definitive on unlocking

I just joined the Symbian Series 60 crowd too (after many years with Nextel), with a 6682. I'm really enjoying this phone so far. Lots to learn though.... Now I just need to find an app that will poll my Gmail on a regular basis, as the built in email handler doesn't seem capable at all....

Good to know how to get that shutter sound to go away too!!

As for unlocking, its a BB5 phone, so it can't be unlocked remotely (by anyone other than Cingular or Nokai that is). It can, in fact, be unlocked, but basically only by Cingular or Nokia.

Awesome!!!

Does Nokia do this for the average consumer, or is it just a corporate thing? Going through Cingular is such a pain in the arse...too many hoops to jump through. Its like they look for a reason not to do it.

(ie: "well you meet all the criteria, but the shoelaces in your left shoe are not properly laced. So you will have to call back when you get that done correctly. You will also need to subscribe to a completely useless plan, so that we can charge you for something we know you don't want or need")

^^That I'm not sure on, as at this time I'm just regurgitating what I've read on the topic so far. I personally don't have a need to unlock mine (yet), so I haven't persued the matter any further.... If you do find out anymore, let me know though....

contact Cingular and tell them your going to Europe and want to use a different carrier while over there. If you qualify which it sounds like Alpha does then they will email you the code in 5 days. This is all a big IFbut it should work. Good luck. Let me know how it goes, I am considering picking up a locked phone when it comes out, so I'm curious.

I tried that about a month ago, and did exactly that. Each time I cleared a requirement, the rep threw up another hurdle. I was ultimately denied for the following reason(s)

- account did not have a zero balance
- even with a zero balance, I would have to subscribe to an intl roaming plan

Of course I could always subscribe to, then cancel the intl roam plan...but I tend to pay my bill on the due date (tight budget), therefore I almost always carry a balance.

In any event, I will keep trying and also research the Nokia option

Cingular has 2 versions of intl roaming:

one has a fee with cheap minutes
other is free and has expensive minutes (pick this one)

After I got that set up, Cingular gave me an unlock code for the 6682.

Silent mode (tap power key, then select) turns off the shutter sound, "C" key will delete pics, emails, texts, etc after confirming delete. "1" key turns on nite mode for pics and videos.
Cingular emailed me with unlock code in 4 days, just told them I was going to Eur on vaction...

Cool, I will try that...thanks

No...account at least 90 days in good standing, and you must have paid full price for your phone. If you got your phone at a discount in a Cingulr store, you may be SOL

Yeah, but that kills the ringer also. Ideally I would like to kill the shutter sound permanently without affecting the other phone settings.

Bingo!!! It wasn't quite that simple, but you put me in the right direction. I wound up going into "profiles" and customizing one to incorporate the silent keytones and warning tones. I'm totally stealth on the paparazzi tip....Yeeeeeeeeah boyeeeeeeee

I've heard people rave about this phone; I had one for about two months and eventually got tired of the "OUT OF MEMORY" errors that would pop up when I simply wanted to take a picture. I didn't have any other apps open mind you... very frustrating. It was a Cingular branded 6682, for the record. At any rate, just got my N73 today and LOVE it. Good luck with your phone!

Hey, thanks man

Yeah...I've gotten quite a few of those "out of memory" myself. I'm hoping that a 512/1G MMC will cure that. now if I could just find a belt holster for this thing, as I am getting tired of carrying it in my hand or stuffing it in my pocket...its only a matter of time till I sit on this thing and crush it

It won't cure those errors. Those are due to the small amount of RAM on the fone. Still, I love this fone... it's just too bad it's not 3G.

On another note, does anyone know if the 6682 can support a dual sim adapter?

No idea about the dual sim, but I know I stopped having "out of memory" errors when I started using opera mini. I've always saved my pics on my MMC, so I've never had memory errors there.

Someone asked earlier about gmail. You can use the built-in client to access gmail, but you have to use gmail's special port settings for POP3. They're not the usual default 110 in, 25 out(smtp). The settings I use are 995 in 465 out. Bear in mind that the email client has issues, though. If you set it to automatically check, and you happen to be in a place where it can't connect when it checks, it will turn off automatic checking and you'll have to manually re-enable it. It's a big PITA if you have it check email frequently. I was having to re-enable it multiple times a day before I gave up using it. The other thing, and I think this is only a problem with IMAP, and not POP3 accounts, is that you can only read and respond to one email per session or the program will hang. So you open your email, read one new message, reply to that message, quit the program, and do it again. If you try to read a message after replying to one, it will hang. I don't know whether this happens to other people, or whether this happens in agile messenger too.

Well, not TOTALLY stealth. The LED flash will actually light up a bit whenever you take a picture, even if flash is off. It's the visual equivalent of the shutter noise. It lets folks see you are doing something with the camera. Haven't figured out a way to disable that yet.
