I found out today that GERD is the cause of this feeling like something is stuck in my throat after having a barium swallow two days ago. The ENT who sent me for it also has GERD. He suggested taking Omeprazole daily over the counter. He gave me the name of his gastro to call if this OTC does not help.

My only symptom is the feeling something is stuck in my throat. I do have regurgitate or suffer from heartburn ever. He seemed to think that I caught this in its infancy. I never in a million years thought this was GERD. Just crazy... If I had not of seen it myself during the barium swallow I would have never believed it.

How long after starting the Omeprazole did the feeling in your throat go away? I am at my wits end with it after two months! Is this feeling esophagitis?

Thanks!

I have the same symptom. I drove me nuts and I couldn't believe it was GERD either! After the third dose of omeprazole I could tell it was working, but my doctor started me off with twice a day dosing for a week just to get it kicked in. Then I took it once a day for two months. That was three years ago. Now if I don't watch my diet, I sometimes get it. At least I know what it is. Pepcid helps sometimes and it works faster, and I can take it as needed.

If it is just your throat with symptoms it sounRAB like you have LPR. (Laryngopharyngeal) reflux. It actually takes very little acid to irritate the throat because it isn't designed to handle regular exposure to acid at that level. From what I've read, it can take a bit longer to feel relief from the medication than with regular GERD. Also, most people with LPR end up needing to take the PPI's twice per day in order to see true relief.

Good luck with your treatment.

Thank you! Would the LPR have shown on my Barrium Swallow? The report did not mention it. I am going to take two. I suppose it couldn't make me feel any worse. Oddly enough, I woke up out of a dead sleep with burn sensation in my belly at 3:30. It's now close to 5:00 and it is still burning. I took some Tums i had from being pregnant. They are not helping at all. Since I had the barium swallow, I have not eaten much. I was an idiot and ate a cheesebuger n fries. I do not eat fast food very often. Look like I will not be eating it again anytime soon!

If LPR foes not show on the Barium Swallow, how would they tell if that is the problem?

Thanks!!!!

LPR is acid reflux. It is just when the reflux hits your throat area. The Barium Swallow shows if you are refluxing and possibly how far you are refluxing depending on how things went that day.

My first Barium Swallow a few years ago showed I was aspirating acid and that it was coming back up into my throat as well.

I'd follow taking whatever your doctor tells you. I was just letting you know what works for most people. You may be lucky enough that a lower dosage works for you. If you are taking OTC dosages, they are typically taking lower dosages than the prescription equivalents. In addition to the PPI's, my GI doc recommended supplementing with Gaviscon as needed. You chew the Gaviscon and it coats when you swallow.

It takes a while for the acid to irritate your throat. It will take a while to heal as well. As hard as it is, give it time. Make sure you are keeping your throat hydrated as well. Tons of water helps.

Changing your diet and lifestyle is crucial. You need to avoid fatty, greasy and spicy fooRAB. Acidic fooRAB such as tomatoes and citrus fruit should also be eliminated. You should also avoid caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, smoking, etc... Propping up the head of your bed by 4-6 inches will also let gravity help a bit as well.

Honestly, not everyone finRAB an easy answer when it comes to LPR. It really does take a while to heal sometimes.
