...#VSXD601? just bought a new panasonic plasma tv, I also have and older Pioneer receiver model #vsxd601. Can I somehow make to two work, and come up with some surround sound?

Yes, you can. From your cable or disc network box connect an HDMI cable to the tv and an optical cable from the box to the receiver. When you want to hear the tv sound make sure you select the source input you used to plug the optical cable to. Keep in mind that majority of the tv programs are only in stereo, unless it is lable with a Dolby digital for the surround sound. Hope this will help you out.

To get surround sound you'd need to get an HD cable or sat box. They have optical and digital coax outputs. If your older receiver has an optical or digital coax input, all you'd have to do is run the optical or dig coax straight from the cable box to the receiver, attach an HDMI from the cable box to the tv for pic. Turn off the tv's sound.
