I had a microdiscetomy on Jan 7 '08 (L5 S1). I am currently in PT as well. My question is...is it reasonable to still be complaining of pain after so many weeks? I feel like I am being such a baby but my thigh and calf are still so tight and I still have pain in my left gluteal area. I take Lyrica and Mobic in AM and PM. It gets to be like 4pm and all I want to do is lay flat will my legs up on pillows. I am afraid to call and ask for any more pain meRAB because I don't know if I am right to still be complaining. PS. I am the one who also had my left trochanteric bursa taken out two days later and do PT for that as well. Please help give me perspective if you have time.......thanks. B

B,

So sorry you are still suffering so much. My biggest advice is to call and let your doctor know or schedule a follow up. They are not going to know unless you let them know your hurting and why suffer?? Sometimes it is possible to have complications which I pray is not your case so I think it is worth checking it out. Good luck and please keep us posted - we care.

Hi Emily,
Thanks for the support. I felt really great waking up yesterday and today but by now (12ish) I start to feel pain, stiff, tingly, etc. I had that hip surgery too (trochanteric bursa removal) so when I have buttock and groin pain it is so hard to tell if it is my back problem or my hip issue. I really appreciate you and this board. It helps me feel less crazy and have people to talk to. The people around me MUST be sick of hearing about it. Thank goodness for a place to check in and vent. How are you feeling? B

Hi NiceShot. Welcome to the board.

In my opinion, whether you've just had surgery or not, if you're experiencing more pain than is normal for you, or pain that your current pain meRAB don't respond to, you need to call your doctor to discuss either increasing your current med(s) or switching you to a different med that may work better for you. I certainly don't think you're being unreasonable though...you're not even 12 weeks post-op yet. To be honest, I'm surprised you're already in PT.

Good luck to you.

I'm doing better. I've upped my pain meRAB and am now on Cyrabalta, too, though still waiting for the insurance company to approve it. It's helped me to not be dwelling on my losses, as I was for a while. I've handled that so well for over 30 years, but when I got worse again in January, it was just the straw that broke the camel's back. It was really bringing me down. The Cyrabalta seems to be working well for me, not making me feel "happy," but just nice and even keeled. I feel normal for the first time and a very, very long time! It makes it worth getting up in the morning! I think the pain the Cyrabalta is supposed to help with is more the nerve type pain, though I may be wrong, and I don't have a lot of that, but with the increase in my pain meRAB, I'm much better controlled. I'm so thankful for my family doctor. He's as much a gem as my surgeon.

A day at a time...

If a micro-D is going to fail, it usually does so fairly soon after the operation. I would certainly not hold back and by all means tell your doctor what you're going through and there's no point in suffering when you're in pain! Your pain could very well be just muscle tightness, depending on how out of commission you were before your surgery. But I wouldn't assume so... I would assume something is wrong and get the doctor to rule it out. I certainly hope it's not a problem with the operation, but I think getting another MRI is in order to rule it out.

Good Luck!

Awesome. Glad you are having a good day. I need to do the day by day mentality so that I am not as disappointed when bad days come. One bad day doesn't always mean it will be a bunch, right? B

Thank for the input. I really appreciate it. I feel a little better right now but if I get up to do anything for too long my lower back and whole leg starts to really ache. The nurabness in my foot has gotten better. Sticking to PT, walking, and MD called in Darvocet. I will see him April 2 too......we will see. Thanks again. How do you feel?

Hi B!

You're not being a baby if it really hurts! You can't compare yourself to what the "average" is. The average is just that, an average. Some people will have less pain and heal more quickly, and some will have more pain and heal more slowly. Don't beat yourself up because you don't think you should be in pain. You ARE! Just be honest and matter of fact about it. Do you feel like he listens to you?

I hope the Darvocet helps.

How are you doing today?

Emily
