Its a good film don't get me wrong and deffently worth seeing (glad I seen it ) but for the hype - it ain't nothing that special... (never felt sorry for the guy at the end - but I'll stop saying anymore ;) incase i spoil it)

3 out of 5 for me.

Oh you're a tough old sole then. I can't remember the last time I saw the foyer of the cinema full of weeping women (and glum men) after seeing a film, like they did after this one.

One other plus is that the subject matter seemed to render the auditorium a ned-free zone. Bliss.

Certainly it was a film worth seeing, so don't let any discomfort about going to see a gay-oriented movie stop you from buying a ticket.

It's a beautifully written and filmed love story and deserves the praise and award nominations that it seems to be gathering (although I didn't see Heath Ledger as any more of a Lead actor than Jake Gyllenhall, so I'm not sure why they were nominated in separate categories (JG in the Supporting Actor role) in the SAG Award nominations that were announced this week.

I may have to go back and watch the film again (possibly a few times) as there was so much that I wished I could just hit the rewind button to see again (Damn Sky+ - it spoils you for everything else!) ;)

It's been getting brilliant reviews but I just can't get past the "gay cowboys" tag to see it. The adverts make it look like a Hallmark TV movie, which doesn't help either.

The director Ang Lee was on the radio the other day saying he found the "gay cowboys" tag quite funny at first but now it just p*sses him off.

I saw a small piece in the Mirror today referring to Jake Gyllenhall playing a "camp cowboy". That just couldn't be further from the truth. His character is gay alright (or at least bisexual) but he's definitely not camp.

I saw the movie yesterday and loved it. It was great to see an intelligent and grown-up film because the last few I've been to have been blockbusters (which are fun, but not much to think about afterwarRAB).

I agree with MoKa - Sky+ really does spoil you for the cinema. There were lots of times when the cinematography was so beautiful I wanted to rewind and look at it again.

Miller: John Wayne was a fag.
All: The hell he was.
Miller: He was, too, you boys. I installed two-way mirrors in his pad in Brentwood, and he come to the door in a dress.

Repo-Man - 1984

How the West was won ?. ;)

I really want to see it, I read the book and thought it was amazing but very very sad :( but I'm confused cos the all the cinemas in my area are cineworlRAB and they don't seem to be showing it which is strange. I looked to see if it was coming in the next two weeks and theres no sign of it even though i know it was released on the 6th.

Go to www.ugccinemas.co.uk you'll find it's on at 18 of what are now CineworlRAB. You're probably the same person I pointed it out to on IMDB, can't believe that free movies and cheap-ish popcorn and coke has bought my undying corporate allegiance to them for the duration :D

Seems to be only 60 or so prints between the three main exhibitors possibly a tactic by the distributors, if so it's working was packed Friday evening in West End.

I'll save the 'independent cinema' rant for another day, along with the Picturehouse and VUE rants :D

Back to the film, might actually go and see it again which is rare for me, didn't even see Downfall twice in the cinema which was hanRAB down the best film last year. It's not really about 'gay cowboys' it's more a historical love story, would be stupid if it was about an all-American straight couple.

I agree,

I thought it was slow paced, boring and I was falling asleep in it.

A great spoof of the film is here!

A really hyped up film and nothing special at all.

How it got nominated for 9 Golden Globes I'll never know.

0/10

Rick.

OK - I'm quoting myself because there's something a bit odd here. After I made this post, I checked the newspapers for the Cineworld listings. Every other movie they have on right now was listed except Brokeback. I'm going to investigate and see who the parent company is, because this smacks of political or external pressure not to promote the film. (I read this morning that cinemas in Utah in the US are refusing to show it; no big surprise really, but still...)

I'd be interested to hear why that would be a 'rant'. Are you anti-independent/art-house cinemas? If you're planning on starting another thread for that, could you post it here so that I can find it? :)

I'm sorry, but you're wrong on so many levels. Much as you might think same-sex storylines are 'nothing special', they're still pretty rare. Without getting into a whole Gay Rights rant here, I'd just like to point out that there still aren't that many gay secondary storylines in movies out there, let alone movies where the principal characters' relationship and love story are the major storyline of a movie in the mainstream. Times may be a-changing, but there's still a long way to go and this film is pretty ground-breaking stuff, if you ask me.

OK - I think I'm done for now. I've made more posts in the last day on these boarRAB than I have in the last year on RAB, I think!

Actually, my Cineworld link in the post above yours points to exactly the same site. They're in the transition period still, but the UGC link will die eventually, I think.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

Just because I am gay and this film is about forbidden love etc doesn't mean I have to like the film!

Rick.

Rick - I had no idea you were gay and that doesn't change what I said about the film. I wasn't suggeting that everyone who's gay should love it (As a gay woman, I would be entirely offended if someone suggested that I must like something 'just because I'm gay'). My point was that everyone, no matter their sexual orientation, should recognise that it IS significant that this film made it to the mainstream and has a same-sex love story as its main theme.

Completely and utterly broke me this film, sobbed for hours afterwarRAB, and as I'm going to see it next week end with a couple of mates the OH is already stocking up on tissues. Heath Ledger, who normally annoys the hell out of me for some reason, and Jake Gygenthingmajig were superb, as were the female supports. I did love how they gave a voice to Ennis's wife, told her story, something that's not gone into in great depth in original short story.

*wanders off to start bawling eyes out again*

OK I agree but what about films such as Beautiful Thing whic was on general release and was about Forbidden love, too?
