out of the garbage? I just adopted a lovely 1 year old cat from the shelter yesterday. She's such a sweetheart, and we really love her.
The employees at the shelter said they found her as a stray, and as such she keeps trying to eat garbage and human food. We ordered pizza yesterday because we had friends over and while we were at the table she kept trying to take it and eat it. This morning I caught her in the kitchen with a half a slice of pizza in her mouth and took it away before she gobbled it down. And then just now I caught her knocking the living room trash can over and she ran away with another piece of pizza in her mouth, but I caught her and took it and threw it away. Earlier tonight she kept jumping into/on top of the kitchen trash can and trying to eat out of it. She does have cat food and water out for her and she's eating that but I guess the stray cat in her hasn't completely gone and she keeps trying to get into the trash and is trying to eat food out of it. I don't know what her obsession is with pizza. There's not any food left out, it's just her getting into the trash cans. Is this something that will go away over time or should we be doing something to stop her? I am supervising her and removing her everytime she tries to eat garbage/ people food and then I place her in front of the cat food but she still does it regardless.
We have another cat that we took in about 6 years ago as a stray, and we had another cat that was adopted 7-8ish years ago from a shelter that they said was a stray (but unfortunately had to be put down due to kidney failure about a month in a half ago) and they've never tried getting into the garbage like this cat does so we really don't know what to do and I'm just concerned that she will get sick if she gets into the trash while I'm at school or not watching her. Again, we don't leave food out and do take the trash out regularly but the trash tends to fill up quickly because there are five people in my house. I don't know if you guys need to know this but she is spayed, not declawed, and is a strictly indoor cat; we don't let any of our cats outside. Thanks in advance.
We don't feed our cats human food; she's getting into the trash herself.
