My sister asked me to help out her husbands friend. He is applying/has applied for a green card so his sister can come here but does not meet the income requirements and needs someone to be a joint financial sponsor. My sister and her husband do not meet the income requirements but I do.
I understand that I'd be responsible if she had bad debt or anything of that nature but I have a few other question on how this works.
Since he needs a joint sponsor now does that mean he filled out all the applications years ago and she is now near the top of the list? Or is this something that is filled out when you first apply to get your family to come here?
Also as a joint sponsor would I have to keep up with a lot of paperwork? I think they require that I file a change of address form and stuff like that, but how much other stuff I have to do after the initial I 864 etc forms are done? I'm just not really good at keeping track of things like that so I wouldn't want to mess up her future citizenship or residency by being a flaky sponsor.
I do know the friend very well and see him like 3-4x a week probably, he is my brother in laws best friend/neighbor from childhood. They both immigrated from the same tiny town in Algeria so are basically like brothers.
I have met the sister before too, she visited for a couple months a few years ago and I visited her/her family when I went to Algeria with my sister and her family last spring.
