Joining the Army (GB)?

Firstly I'm not fit enough, nor do I have the minerals to get myself down to the Careers Office.
I know this is what I want to do with my life, I'm just shy when I don't need to be.
I can run 1.5miles on the treadmill in 12 minutes, thats stopping and starting and at a incline of 2/3. When running on concrete or through the woods I can only run about 800m and jog perhaps 1600m. I can manage 32 sit ups in a minute and 28 press ups per min.
I can work through stitches as I know I'll have to once in training but I just need help and guidance from people who have been through selection, basic and have the right fitness levels.
Can anyone help me with my fitness (diet plan, exercises, useful pointers etc)?

www.military.com has lots of pt tips.

You probably know this already, but the most important thing is to train for muscular endurance (low weight, high reps) rather than trying to build muscle bulk (high weight, low reps)

There's no way to learn to run except to run, run, and run some more. Breaking up a run with short sprints sucks, but it is very effective.

Don't worry about your fitness, you seem to be much fitter than I was when I joined the Army ! You will get tons of fitness training when you join & all the help & advice you need, fitness training is High Priority in the Services. Get to the Careers Office & sign up ! Good Luck !
