We gotta do this:
The whole point behind John Stuart Mill's philosophy is that he is concerned with mob rule. This means that he is concerned with the majority of society making laws against groups with little social power simply because the majority themselves have social power. Although he agrees that this is the democratic system, in that majority sentiment "rules," JSM is concerned with those groups of individuals who are continually oppressed in society because of their minority status.
QUESTION: what are some groups or viewpoints that are continually oppressed in society (any society, American or other) today? Is it important that even though these may be minority viewpoints, that they are expressed in society? How could we make sure that minority viewpoints can be expressed in society? Give examples.
I'm not sure if I would be off topic if I took the example of being an atheist. Everything seems to be tied to religion these days. If it's gay rights, abortion or other sensible issues, it always ends up to be a religion issue. I ( as an atheist) would be in the minority in this case. The things I support are not acceptable in the public because of their religious views.
I don't really know how to discuss this using JSM work. It's not about being black , hay etc. , which would be a better topic to talk about, but I thought I would give it a try. Any ideas? How could I discuss this?
