John Martyn Dies

Another of the greats gone! That's what I hate about getting older --- you end up having to watch all your heroes die. :(
RIP John, you won't be forgotten...
 
I am utterly devastated. Very rarely has anybody's music truly touched me. Martyn's music may never have set the world on fire but it some of the most searingly honest and emotional music that I have ever heard. A man who lived life to the absolute full and who has battled drug addiction and alcoholism, yet never hid the fact or admitted weakness.

The singer, who took to performing in a wheelchair, told Q Magazine he had no regrets.

"If I could control myself more, I think the music would be much less interesting," he said.

"I'd probably be a great deal richer but I'd have had far less fun and I'd be making really dull music."

May you rest in peace big man. I feel as though I have lost a friend.

My fanboyism is well documented here but it really does seem that many of you have not heard this fantastic artist, so I have put together a compilation for the thread. Many people don't realise that he wrote all his own music and played many instruments. He was extremely influential in the burgeoning London Folk scene in the late 60's where he gained a reputation as one of the best acoustic guitar players around. Even his electric playing is brilliant and the last two mellow tracks showcase his talent.

He always erabraced different musical styles and that included Folk, Blues, Funk, Jazz and even Trip Hop. If you have ever loved someone truly then listen to 'Hurt In Your Heart' and experience an artist writing a song begging for his estranged wife to come back to him. David Gilmour was a massive fan and I do have a track of them performing together and over the last few years he has collaborated with artists such as Talvin singh and Faithless.

It seems men with acoustic guitars always die criminally underrated. Let's hope the one good thing that comes out of this is the popularity he always deserves.
