John K is retiring....

One of my friends showed me this today...Ren and Stimpy creator John k has decided to retire...

"Chris, if someone's choice is to starve themselves for 3 years while they make 1 cartoon that will never make any money in return, then more power to them. I wanna be able to pay my rent and work with the best people possible and make stuff that a lot of people like and have fun doing it. I don't wanna make stuff just for other animators. But I'm not opposed to other people doing things the way they want to. It's just not for me. I'm gonna retire soon anyway. Someone else can fix all the problems."

Thoughts anyone? Oh and John set his blog for invite only....

You can retire from doing nothing? :p

Sorry, sorry...

(That quote up there actually had me partially agreeing with him up until he said "Let someone else fix all the problems.")

Isn't he already retired? He really hasn't done anything in years, with the exception of critiquing other people's work in the animation field.

Creativerealms, I think John has given up on that fact that people dont like cartoony stuff anymore, and just watch family guy.

Nah, he still does freelance animation direction once in a while.

Anyhow, as much as I hate to say this about the guy who made Ren and Stimpy, good riddance. He brought most of his misery upon himself because he was so unwilling to compromise his style.

If he really is retiring then it's sad for a variety of reasons. One is despite his many flaws, John did know what he was talking about and thus can no longer help others. Another is he's retiring from a career that should have been so much more and seemed to have already died 10 years ago. If only he had any kind of people skills he would be bigger than what he is. That's the way she goes though.

Key words "Once in a while."

Frankly, that last sentence sounds like he's just trying to get attention to me.

I'm trying not to be too mean-spirited here, but I honestly can't see how John K. stopping.... whatever it is he's doing.... is going to affect anyone.

I'm sorry, but I have to agree with several others when I say that, at this point, it's a "good riddance" feeling toward John K.

If he's going to keep complaining on how cartoons aren't done right and yet not contribute anything good himself, then there's nothing he can do but retire, really.

So, does this mean the George Liquor show he's been trying to get off the ground isn't going to become series any time soon?

Oh well, I still question what the retirement statement means anyway. Is he retiring from making blog posts, or making cartoons?

Yeesh, a lot of hostility here just because John has an opinion? Did he bash your favorite childhood cartoon or something? Get over it. The man has opinions, you don't agree with them, fine. It's a free country.

But I do have to agree on the 'retiring from what?' comment. He hasn't done anything since APC, which was 7 years ago, right?

So I guess that means his [adult swim] pilot won't get picked up?

Well, as far as original productions goes he was working on a pilot for a George Liquor series. Last I heard, he was pitching it to Adult Swim, and if the part of him retiring from animation himself is true, then I guess Adult Swim didn't pick it up. Other than that, he did do an animation for a song in Class of 3000, a Weird Al music video, and I think an ad of some sort, since the cancelation of APC.

I have to agree with everyone here. John K brought most of his problems on himself. He was unwilling to play by the rules, and he got burned because off it.

Nothing wrong with his opinions. But its no secret that he was extremely hard to work with. Actually impossible would be a better word for it. John is a man who should be revered for his talent and knowledge but as a person he comes off as disgusting.

Well, considering his lack of work or inability to find a steady job, he was already retired in a sense, he just decided to accept it now instead of further messing up his chances.

I doubt we've heard the last of him though. He'll probably make some convention appearances or more blog posts but now no one has to deal with his eternal tardiness on deadlines.

I don't know about the retiring thing ,but I do think the blog setting is for the better. Obnoxious person or not, too many people get worked up over his opinions. The less people reporting the latest news about what John K thinks and causing a flamefest filled to the brim with deadhorses, the better.
