Jusst finally seen the whole film after all these years!

Good movie - i am a fan of Carpenter. This isnt his best - even Christine and They Live are better and it certainly is not a patch on The Thing (his best ever film IMO)

I recommend if you havent seen. it has a tense aspect throughout - a sort of tenseness i havent seen in any new horror films over the last 10 years.

Rented it from the best store in Christchurch Alice In Video Land - check it www.aliceinvidoeland.co.nz Actually physically going to the rental video shop is popular over here. can rent 3 old movies for $7.50 (less then 3 quid) for a week. it certainly has helped my transcression into this new country!

I love that film!

You are right, there is a definite feeling of doom that pervades the whole film. Also, Alice Cooper gives a pretty spooky turn as the leader of the homeless 'zombie' types who surround the church.

Also, i agree that The Thing is far better (than pretty much any other film) but i am going to have to watch this film again now 'cause i haven't seen it for years.

I remember watching this a few years ago and expecting it to be some kind of vampire film - obviously I'd not read anything about it beforehand. I thought it was really good, as has been said - very tense with a really threatening atmosphere.

It's one big Quatermass homage (it's written by Carpenter under the pen name Martin Quatermass) but the atmosphere is great. Shame the low budget let it down - perhaps this is one horror film that genuinely deserves a remake.
I rather suspect Carpenter would like to have had a shot at Quatermass and the Pit instead.

This is a great little movie; I used to have it on a 'double feature' VHS (along with 'Assault on Precinct 13' [1976], another Carpenter great), but unfortunately it got trashed in my old VCR :(

No, it's not his best work, but then again, very few movies are ever going to match the likes of Halloween :)

Very underrated Carpenter film. Full of great imagery - the hand coming out of the mirror, the figures (was it ALice Cooper?) in the courtyard, the Christ / prophet like figure. This has one of the most sombre, foreboding mooRAB of all his films and really draws you in to the story. I think that was one of his last really good movies before the rot set in. Though I still like 'In the Mouth of Madness'...actually, why isn't that on DVD?

in the mouth of madness is GREAT. prince of darkness is better each time i see it. carpenter has said these 2 (together with they live) forms a loose apocalypse trilogy

Cheers - but I want a decent Region 2 version, not a Region 1 copy. All other Carpenter films (even crap like Ghosts of Mars!) seem to have had a R2 release, why not this one?
