many people ask this, and i think i've developed a plausible theory... if we can say this is an allusion to Exodus 31 when God carved the commandments into the stone with His finger, we can call the adulteress an emblem of God's people because in the OT over and over He says I am a husband to them and she has been unfaithful to Me. the pharisees trying to trap Jesus become an emblem of the law because that is what bound us to sin. when Jesus speaks though there is no one left to condemn her, so she then becomes an emblem of the redeemed bride.
so what was Jesus writing in the sand? if i had to speculate or guess it would be the new commandment declared in John 13/34 and established in Galations 6/2:
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.Jn 13/34
Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. Gal 6/2
... which is exactly the opposite of what the pharisees were doing when they found the woman in sin. so what are your thoughts about it?
