alot of people do that. Its a neat idea, and alot of fun. My suggestion is not to depend on the income. these kinds of things are highly unpredictable. And choose a good area, somewhere the people appreciate your talent.

As far as this being a good way to make money... no... it really isn't. Not for someone who is unestablished and has no known name. There's not a whole lot of money in being a photographer.

Here, I'll copy paste something I wrote up yesterday for a similar question. It applies here.

As far as general artistic photographers, there are only a handful who make a living at it. Remember that even some of Ansel Adam's greatest works were done as a hobbiest and in his free time, not on the clock.

There’s roughly 144, 000 photographers in the United States. Half of those are self employed. The top ten percent made less than $60, 000 last year. The lower income made about $17,000. The mean income was roughly between $26,000 - $30,000. Virtually all new photography studios will close within their first year. Generally from bankruptcy. Most studios have been passed along over the years from one photographer to the next. These are the long-lasting ones. The majority of photographers out there are photojournalists. Of the photojournalists, many work second jobs.
