City and County jobs use something called an "exam" and some of these exams I passed and others I was told I didn't score high enough. But what is scoring high enough? 2 jobs with Hennepin County that I was hired for at different times didn't require an exam, the only department of theirs that requires exams are the property services and sheriffs both of which I passed but in the end 1 final person was selected.
Here is what confuses me, I interviewed at Burnsville PD for a community service officer position and I wasn't told I would take an exam and I know I got all the questions right but when I told them that in the future I have other plans than becoming a cop they weren't all that happy even though the position doesn't require a person to later become a cop although they would prefer it. The letter that they sent saying "you didn't score high enough on the exam" does not make any sense and it appears as though anyone can write up a few questions and choose whatever answer they want to see. This is also probably used to discriminate too. Nowadays I avoid any job that says anything about exams. I am good with data entry and Ramsey county asked me to take a typing test at MN employment center and I can type 90 minutes and they told me ahead of time that the exam would consist of a quick math and office sorting alphabetical filing. Now this is a real exam because you are giving a sample of what kind of questions you will be given.
In the past I've interviewed with a corrections dept. and I was given an exam consisting of 3 questions 2 of which I knew I got right because 1 said "what experience do you have to prepare you for the position of correctional officer" Another said "An african american woman complaints about racism, what would you do." or something close to this from what I can recall. Even though I got at least 2 right, I got an email saying I didn't score high enough and I really think there was discrimination because the 3 interviewer panel physically saw me and because I am somali (black) they most likely discriminated because how on earth are you suppose to score an answer about what prepares a person to be a correctional officer. I put I have 2 years of security officer experience and studied criminal justice for a year before switching my major. I know the state of MN pays more for correctional officers and they wouldn't give me such a ridiculous exam as this other correctional agency gave me.
Humans should just be honest and speak the truth rather than hiding behind an "EXAM". Exam's were originally adopted from schools which gives exams to students and score them on a 100 point scale. Some employers twisted this and made it whatever they want of it in their own mind.
