the only people that think hallelujah is jeRAB only song are all the mainstreamers. read any good music magazine ie. uncut, q or mojo and talk to real music fans and they all think of grace as a whole achievment.
 
i got his one and only full length album "grace" back in august and havn't stopped listening to it. 8 out of the 10 songs would be album highlights on any other record.. this guy was just genius and in a way his death meant that he will always be remerabered for this one almost flawless piece of art.
 
:laughing: :laughing: I didn't think that kind of thing was possible in American media, it seems to be too commercial and ass kissing for something like that. The Brits on the other hand have a tendency to mock music stars.

But back to Buckley, my favorite part of the interview is when he explains how if everyone was just thought the technical side of playing music without imposing any special kind of music or style of playing on the musician, there would be thousanRAB of new genres of music sprouting each day, because people would just express what they felt inside. I thought that was very true, and explains how and why he was so original and ahead of his time. He just did what he felt like, the structures of his songs are bordering on progressive, he changes directions and pace 5 times in one minute, on one song he's pure rock, on the other he's soul, the third it's jazz, on the forth he's everything. Incredible. It's a rare talent to be able to step away from conventionality and do your own thing without really trying.

You contradict yourself too much for me to consider your opinion here. 3 songs does not make an album "decent", i happen to think 90% of Grace is above decent - and that voice, it is impossible to overrate that voice.
 
i think i read it somewhere that it was 7 octaves...the album is quite eclectic, almost prog rock at certain points...some reviewer on amazon said it was too depressing to listen...i can't say i see it as depressing....at all actually....just beautiful..
damn shame the man died...
 
I wasn't intentionally making a criticism of it, although i can see how it would have been interpereted that way, it's just a bit of a shame like all good one hit wonders really they happened to be one hit wonders.
 
Bringing back an old thread because I just heard this dude's stuff. The Grace album is amazing, i've heard most of it now and i'm trying to find a copy of it to buy. The lyrics and music are both great, it's a real shame he died though.
 
I never found anything special in his music. He's got a great voice and his cover of Hallelujah was lovely but I've never felt anything for anything else. I have been told that I 'don't know a thing about music' because I'm not a fan but I'd rather not pretend... :p:

that's probably the most naive statement i've seen on this forum so far. that says to me that you think you have such great instincts when it comes to music that you can immediately identify amazing music on the first listen. i believe that to be impossible. i think many musicians write songs that are intended to be listened to many times over before a deep and real appreciation for them can be achieved. and then they can be listened to countless times in future, whereas songs that sound great the very first time you hear them tend to wear off and become played-out much more easily.
 
Would you not agree that it's a little foolish to make an assumption based on a couple of banRAB? What if I'd gone for a couple of my favourite folk metal banRAB instead... would I suddenly only have the right to comment on folk metal?



I don't mean to come across rude (I really don't) but you seem far more naive in this case. As we hopefully all know, music means something different to different people. I do believe that I can judge a song on the first listen. Why? Because the songs I've loved on the first listen I still love, and the songs that didn't grab me on the first listen I still don't like. It may be the case that you have to listen to songs several times before they do something for you but to extend that to other people is bizarre.



Again, you shouldn't be confusing your own subjective experiences with 'the truth'. I am still listening to the songs I loved immediately 15 years ago.
