Jeep Wrangler Hard-Top Question?

I need to haul some long boxes and I am wondering if it is safe to drive with the rear windshield open. The bottom tailgate would be closed.
I have a concern about leaving the glass up because my windshield wiper mechanism is attached to it. Has anyone done this before?
 
As long as you pad the glass it should be ok. But why not fold down the Passenger seat and put the long boxes right up to the dash.
