Jeep will not stay running!!??!?

My 92 Jeep Wrangler Sahara fires up,(it starts) its a beautiful thing! Until I take my foot of the pedal and it cuts off, I repeat this process several times with the same outcome, it will not stay running! Can anyone shed some light on this for me please?
ALSO, normally I would not have to hit the gas in order to start the engine.
