Jeep ran out of oil, engine OK?

I have a 2001 Jeep liberty. It has a leak in one of the oil lines. It had oil two weeks ago when we checked, but two days ago, driving home, it shuddered and stalled out as i pulled up to a stoplight. i had to put it in park and restart it. We checked the oil again and it was empty, completely. We put more in, and since the oil hadnt gotten all the way through the engine yet, it stalled as we drove again, but then it started doing it less and less. Do you think my engine is alright? I'm seeing a mechanic tomorrow, do you think its ok to drive it again? I'd prefer answers from people who know engines or have had similar experiences
