Jeep Grand Cherokee Shifting/Gear Indicator Problem?

My 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo on occasion when pulling away from a stop will not shift out of first gear. On the dash where the gear indicator is (P R N D) usually has a bracket around which gear I'm in, however when this happens, all 4 options have the bracket. It looks like this: [P] [R] [N] [D]

Does anyone know what this could be caused from? It won't shift into second gear, if I come to a complete stop though, it will go back to normal.

This happened twice now in one week, after having the car for almost a year.

Your MIL (check engine lamp) should be on after that. If so you need to have the code read in the PCM. I would bet that you have the code U0404. Lost Communication with ESM. If that is the case you will have to replace the shifter bezel. Easy to do but costs a bunch.
