I am thinking of buying a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee for $2000 Everything works fine except there is a noise in the left rear end of the vehicle (around the wheel) ...it is a constant grinding sound that you can hear at all speeds (rather loud too)...new brakes but apparently the noise was there before the brakes were replaced....I'm suspecting bearings or rear differential....former would mean a lower repair bill I assume..any suggestions ?

So drive around for about 15 minutes, and feel around. If the left axle feels hot and the right is cool, then you know. If they're both the same, figure the differential. What I've also seen is a bent rim make annoying noises. An axle bearing should be maybe $100-$125.

Are the rear brakes drum or disc? If you have disc brakes then the problem cold be the emergancy brake shoes are broken or loose behind the rotors. The other common problem is the carrier bearing for the differential could be bad this is typical.
