Jeep Grand Cherokee, Extremely overheated?

Okay so I recently received a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee from a family member, it had extremely overheated a few years back due to a somehow undetected leak in the radiator in turn leading to extreme internal temperatures which broke the rods, also somehow water ended up getting mixed with the oil. I haven't really opened anything up yet to check it out all of this is just on the words of my family. Anyway i was wondering if the engine is even salvageable at this point or if i should just pull it and start over, its a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited edition w/ 4.7L V8
