jeep cherokee CV joint - how long until it fails?

On my 1998 4wd cherokee, the front drivers side wheel pops when you turn to pull in and out of parking spaces. But it rides smooth otherwise. How much life is left in the cv joint before it fails? And what would happen if it failed, would the car still drive?
