It's possible that it's just the planetary in the transfer case. I'm not too familiar with the jeeps but chevy's tend to make a low whine. Also check the fluid in the transfer case. Mine was making a lot of weird noises. I found not only was the fluid dark and worn out, the transmission was leaking fluid into the transfer case causing it to be overfull.
