I have a 1995 Jeep XJ (Cherokee Sport) with the 4 liter straight 6 engine, with 173,000 miles. I don't know who had it before, I got it from a friend from someone else.
To get to the point, it has knocking sound, (not tapping or rasping) under the following conditions:
1. It only knocks when it is warm. the first 10 minutes of driving it it doesn't make a knocking sound at all.
2. It is really quiet in park and neutral, and it's quiet in drive with barely any load on it. when I put a load on it it is still quiet too. It only makes the knocking noise when its about to switch gears, from 1 to 2 gear, 2 to 3, and so on, a good 1-3 seconds before the transmissions shifts, and when the engine is coasting, not having any load barely.
3. when warmed up, the knock starts at about 1500 RPM to 2200 RPM in park. it disapears pretty much before or after that. its loud, not quiet.
4. When I'm giving it gas it is quiet all around, only when I let off the gas and it switches gears it gets knocky and loud at all RPMS.....
