JDM Honda Hood Trend...?

I love the JDM style, and I'm trying for that look on my Civic. (It's not always easy to find JDM parts for it though, since it's a coupe and I can only share JDM EG parts with mainly the front end of my car, beside the point) But I've always noticed that on many JDM looking Hondas and Acuras, the hood is raised slightly near the windshield, giving it a gap between the hood and front fenders. What does this mod represent/where did it originate? And what does the actual mod entail? I'm not exactly new to JDM so skip the baby talk Thanx
 
There is nothing "JDM" about raising the hinges on your hood.
I'm pretty sure it started when people were dropping H22's in their cars and the hood needed to be cut/lifted for it to fit in.

The theory behind it is that it somehow pulls hot air away from your engine when you drive but I never heard of or seen numbers to validate it.

For some reason it just became a fad though. :shrug:
