Jaws

Hi :)

Anyone a fan of JAWS? I am, still ... after all these years I still love watching this film.

Did it or does it still come to mind when you are swimming in the sea? It still does with me, especially if I am somewhere tropical.... even though I know there are no great whites anywhere near where I am... I still crap myself (not literaly:D) and expect to see a fin silently gliding through the water towarRAB me... :D

The sequels were crap IMO, but the original is still a classic :)

How do you know that? Great Whites have been spotted as far north as Venice.

One of my favourite films too. The first one (of many!) I bought the soundtrack to. Come to think of it, it was the first LP I bought!

I mean when I am standing in 2 feet of water off the beach, (I dont like not being able to feel the floor under my feet! ) They dont come in that far!! :) They have also been seen off the west cost of England, down by lanRAB end.. they seem to prefer colder waters apparently.

We still do the dur ne dur ne du du du du... when in the water. LOL... I hope they put it on soon.. fancy watching it now. :)

Ha, I thought I was the only one who gets that scared because of Jaws!! When I was little, me and my sister used to think that the vents in the deep end of swimming pools had sharks behind them and that they would break their way through.......ahem...

One of my all time favourite films.

Lol! I LOVE this film, as well as the follow ons as well (all apart from Jaws: 3).
Jaws 2 and Jaws: The Revenge, were great!

Yes, they even make me scared of the sea! I was swimming in Isle of Wight seas, with water up to my hips. I imagined in my mind a fin and huge black eyes, like on the film - panicked and ran. This film has really has a negative impact on me! The seas will never be the same again!

Jaws was on the TV for the first time when I was 9, and I remember everyone standing around in little groups talking about it. I had been far too scared to watch it, so I just nodded and agreed with what everyone else said were the 'best bits'! :o :D

Ah! The last decent film that Spielberg created :) Yeah, I'm still a fan, although age hasn't exactly been kind to it in some respects - when you (unfortunately) watch films like 'Open Water', you see just how exploited the movie has become....

I love this film and always watch it when it's on the TV. I bought the book in a charity shop last year, but i've been too scared to read it yet..... :o

I went to Florida in February, and at Universal Studios there's the Jaws boat ride, where you're taken on a boat with a 'tour guide' and i crapped myself when the 'shark' came roaring out of the water!!

i think they're about to release a 30th anniversary edition DVD.

(was there a 25th anniversary DVD, or am i being cynical now?)

Iain

They have an annual festival in Martha's Vineyard (where it was filmed)every year, apparently this years was brilliant because of the 30th anniversary

A classic indeed.
I think there was a 25th anniversary DVD so the 30th is a bit cheeky. It's also rumoured there are plans to re-release the film with a CGI shark. Not sure if that's a good idea.
Never thought I'd ever see 'Jaws the revenge' and 'great' in the same sentence! All the sequels were rubbish IMO.
Open Water was scarier than Jaws I thought, because it was more realistic. Each is its own (great) film, they just happen to have sharks in them.

Jaws is a classic. It was the first film I saw at the cinema without my parents and it scared the crap out of me.

It showed Spielberg's talent for pacing and directing, something which he'd already proved with his previous movie, Duel.

The lead actor trio of Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw was perfect casting, but what made it really outstanding was the Oscar-winning music score by John Williams (who, of course, went on to even bigger things with the music score for Star Wars).

The only criticism is that sometimes you can tell it's a mechanical shark, but these days we are spoilt by high-quality CGI, and it's easy to look back on older movies and think that special effects are rubbish, but it's still damn scary.

There was a 25th anniversary edition too, I know as I have it. Well it's been a few years since Spielberg last made a decent film, maybe he's short of a few bob :D .

i had a feeling there was, but wasn't sure.

jaws trivia - it was the first film to use that technique/effect that sort of zooms in and zooms out at the same time. or whatever it does - the bit where roy scheider is sat on the beach and realises the shark has gotten someone.

I love Jaws, and I watched it only last week (the 25th anniversary dvd). It may look a bit dated, but it's still not bad and it retains the scare factor. I don't think I'll ever go swimming in the sea again (not that I ever have, anyway!).

The book's great - you'll see they took a few 'Hollywood liberties' with the Hooper/Vaughn/Ellen characters in the film though!

Not sure it was, I think Spielberg said Hitchcock had once used it, and Spielberg himself had used it in an episode of 'Night Gallery'.

You can do the 'depth of field' effect yourself with a camcorder. Zoom in on a subject from a distance, then walk up to it whilst zooming out (takes some practice).

[rummages]

apparently hitchcock used the effect in reverse for vertigo, but the shot is popularly credited to jaws.

it is a pretty cool one - every time i see it now, it always makes me think of jaws.
