japanese knotweed in the garden?

don't groan, but bought house last year (south east UK) and noted some dry stubbly bamboo-type/reed stumps in the ground at the bottom of the garden - cut them away and in the last few weeks these beasties have sprouted up to about 3 metres - my friend popped round for a cuppa and was apoplectic when she saw them because apparently (I'm not a gardener) it is japanese knot-weed and not good (underestimation!)- the neighbour at the bottom of the garden has it all around his sheds too on the other side of the fence backing onto the area it is growing in my garden - how best to get rid without damaging the sapling trees I planted next to it? (before I realised what it was) -thanks - at the moment it is localised to where the neighbouring gardens converge at the end and not near any buildings/houses (other than sheds)

Who is your local council? Report it to them. Local councils require you to report Japanese knotweed to them, for them to deal with professionally. Japanese knotweed can cause rashes so you should not try to cut it down (which simply makes it grow back thicker). The council will give it several spray treatments with a particular chemical to kill it to the root, and will check if the treatment is successful. Japanese knotweed can break concrete and brick, so it is vital to report it.

gardeners world last week did an item on japanese knotweed and
it has been discovered that a certain type of aphid destroys the plant
whereas poisons do not, this aphid is going to be brought into this
country for that purpose.

Oh dear, this is not nice, and it needs urgent attention. To be successful,it needs both you and your
neighbour to attack it very hard the roots go down a hell of a way,12" at least, and they always
break off.
First job----move the sapling trees,no choice....
second get a high concentrate of Round up,and contact the council, garden maintenance dept,
because where I live the council are at war with this evasive vigorous weed,ALSO you will not be
allowed to sell your house untill it has been irradicated. This is important the neighbour MUST go
into this as well or it ain't going to work good luck you will need it ,o.k.bye-bye.D..
