"Japan, it's not funny anymore"

A bit of an interesting read regarding the writer's experience living in Japan.

However, once I got to the first part and saw the subtitle part of "ANIME SUCKS!" I knew I wasn't going to like some of it. Then I read this line. I knew I was gonna dislike and probably hate a lot of it.

For the record, it's not horrible and it's amusing at times, but let me bring up this little post on HJU regarding how much anime apparently sucks.

Anyway, what'd you guys think of the article?

I mean, it's just an opinion piece done by a guy who admits that he doesn't like going out and being sociable. Of course he's going to gripe. What do I care that one person in the entire world doesn't like anime?

Or any specific series....(But noooo, people gotta get all sensitive and defensive and stuff) If only there were more people like you in the world. You just became my new best friend.

You couldn't pay me to finish reading a ranting tantrum that long. I gave up and quickly scanned the rest when he started complaining about how Japanese people ate meat too much. Considering how many things he claims to hate, I have no idea why the hell he lives in the country in the first place. Seriously.

There's a vague worthy point in there about the anime industry's problems, but it's not worth engaging seriously when he's turning the moe/fanservice monster into a gigantic straw man that he can burn down. And it's downright hilarious to claim that DBZ is coherent (which it is) whereas One Piece is apparently a step removed from being a shonen jump Excel Saga or something. No one who actually pays attention to it could possibly make such a ludicrous claim.

Well, at one point he does mention that he has a drummer. If he's a musician, especially one who's in experimental music, Japan is the place to be. The american experimental music scene is nonexistent, europe's is just plain boring and weird but Japan is a veritable haven for people doing anything interesting musically. It's probably because they have so much terrible J-pop.

Just a theory though, I wasn't gonna read the whole thing either but it would make sense as to why he'd live there even though the place annoyed him.

Oh, I'm familiar with his type. Portland's full of 'em. Vegan, hipsters, hate the city but just never move away for some reason. I like to argue with them and crush their little undernourished, over caffinated souls.

I'd say he should watch moar Gintama but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't get it. Which would irk him, because it seems like the thing he should get.

People like this piss me off when they think that everything they say is the holy truth. Anime sucks! That's right, he's no doubt seen every anime to come out since the masterpiece of Dragon Ball Z and it's all undeniable garbage, especially that retarded ripoff called One Piece.

The only criticism I have for the other guy is that Hanamaru Kindergarten isn't a children's anime. Still, he had a lot of good points.

I'm still reading it, but I knew what I was getting into when I started it. Tim Rogers is notorious for the long winded praise he gives things he likes and even longer rants about what he doesn't.

He does give some interesting video game insights in his writing, but it's usually buried under his meandering prose.

Wow-wii-wow-wii, this is funny. No really, its funny. This guy just wrote about things that he hate and just blame Japan for it.

There is always going to be somebody who thinks anime sucks and is nothing but a bunch of Dragonball or Pokemon clones. Best thing you can do is ignore them!

On one hand, I'd say he veers into whining in regarRAB to the smoking and meat content thing. I've never been one to care terrifically for health nuts.

On the other hand, he's certainly got a point in regarRAB to many of the weird cultural tics, especially the extremely artificial nature that seeps into everyday conversations and interactions. There's a definite sense of doing things because they're expected, rather than being important or relevant. I've worked with some Japanese grad students before, and they mentioned a few of these issues when I asked about how they would compare living in the US versus Japan.

I, for one, know I wouldn't last in Japan. I need personal space and I also hate forced interaction. I can see how so many end up as hikkikomoris.

The thing about people with Tattoos not being allowed in his Gym because of perceived Yakuza connections made me lol, as did the thing about people assuming all gamers smoked (and him never having seen a guy play Tekken 6 and not smoke...).

Look, I can understand why he doesn't like Japan. Hell, even I got somethings I don't like about Japan. But, a good chunk what he is saying are mostly personal things and entertainment wise. I hate to tell him this, but thats every where. People smoke, people eat meat, people watch anime, people are just weird. Even him.

Oh, One Piece and DragonBall...Is that the best you got?! Watch Green Green, watch Eiken. Make it, watch and read more anime/manga before leaving bold statements like that.

The great advantage of the Internet is that it gives many people a place to voice their opinions in a public forum when they otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to.

The great disadvantage of the Internet is that it gives many people a place to voice their long-winded, whiny, irritating, self-righteous opinions in a public forum when they otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to.

Either way I only got part-way through the article, and what I read just seemed like typical griping blogger fodder.

haha. haven't read it yet.
don't plan to.

but from your posts...seemed you guys wasted mins of your lives reading that garbage.

thanks for the heaRAB up

Oh, hey, another one that hates Chu-Bra! Because...apperantly fan-service always will always suck unless it's from bleepin' GAINAX. And yes, I said that again.

Why can't people just know there are people with different kind of tastes in Anime?

I mean, what if there are people that like Queen's Blade (yes, I'm throwing this out as an example, shut up) because of the battles, or soething.

You know what? If someone likes a series we al hate or something, we shouldn't insult the person who is a fan of it. In fact, nobody has insulted me for watching Chu-Bra.

I think people are zoneing in far too much on the anti-anime part of this. Yeah, it's full of mistakes but this isn't really an anti-anime rant, it's a rant against modern Japanese society. Not sure how much we shhould read into it (as an information source, the internet actually does more to promote Japan as this Seuss-style wonderland of dream like inconsistency) but zoneing in on a tiny portion seems to miss the point.

Hey, it's just one guy with an opinion. I don't see anything wrong with that. I read most of the post (way too long to read in one sitting) and I definitely thought it was interesting enough. Most of this is no doubt true and I know that as much as I like the country I know Japan is a place I could never live in.

Seems to me that people just gave up on the post and are crying foul simply because he has a negative opinion of anime. If anime wasn't his first bullet point I'm sure many people would have given the post a fairer shot.
